Despite what you see your favorite star look like on stage or on the red carpet the fact is that many of the beautiful people we admire are experiencing the same issues we are.  

So what is the real cause of hair loss? Luckily we have the answer. If you are losing your hair its likely because….

You are anemic; dieting heavily; have a fungal infection; taking drugs; taking too many aspirins; have had a high fever recently; stopped taking the birth control pill; currently on the pill; you have infected tonsils; pulling your hair out; wearing your hair too tightly; have recently had an operation; are iron deficient; recently experienced psycho effective shock i.e. a death in the family; you had a baby 3 months ago; you are a diabetic; you have cancer; have a thyroid imbalance; you have been overexposed to x-rays; going through or post menopause; you are not absorbing enough zinc; your mother is thinning; your father is thinning; someone in your family’s history had thinning hair…….

If you’re saying to yourself…are you kidding me! ! My response is no I’m not BUT trying to find the answer to your thinning hair without consulting a professional is much like reading this long list of possible causes: confusing and frustrating.

Your hair is mainly composed of protein and compared to everything else in your body it grows very, very fast. It also gets the majority of its nutrition from your blood. What does this mean? Well every time you experience an internal imbalance or change (whether it is hormonal, nutritional or otherwise…read the list above if you have the patience) guess what one of the first indicators is…YOUR HAIR!!

As a Trichologist it is my job to take into account the many causes of hair loss and identify how your hair loss is different from someone else’s. You see, the fact is there is no 1 magical solution for everyone (despite what some commercials or infomercials claim) Men are different from women, adults vary from person to person and of course are different from children.

    I think it is an applicable links about our hair could be a good indication what our body’s current health status is. I’ve read several articles and one of them that tackles about zinc at http://products.mercola.com/zinc-supplements/ where having zinc deficiency is a big cause of a weak immune system. Our hair responds on our body’s status. So what do you suggest that I should maintain using vitamins or even eat to maintain a better health status?

      Thank you for your comment. I am very familiar with Dr. Mercola and the research and articles he posts on his website. I think he gives some great advice on staying healthy.

      At Capilia Truly You we are strong believers in a holistic approach to your health. A balanced diet, exercise and supplements are important to maintain a healthy body and scalp.
      We see the scalp as the soil that,when fertile and healthy, can grow healthy hair. Hair thinning and hair loss is, as I explained in my posting is a complicated matter. It can be the result of one, many, or a combination of a few factors. For this reason only taking a zinc supplement or a multivitamin isn’t often enough to maintain a healthy scalp and hair. There may be other factors that are affecting your hair that you may not even be aware of? In addition, eating right and staying healthy may not be enough if your scalp hygiene is incorrect. Using the wrong products to clean your scalp, and not cleaning it correctly can hinder any progress you’ve made with diet or supplements. Look at it as using organic seeds to grow lettuce (for instance), and then spraying that crop with green spray paint. At first, on the surface (and likely from a distance), the lettuce appears bright green and healthy. As you know in actuality whats happening is that the spray paint is damaging the crop and soil and eventually it will not be healthy and stop growing.

      So you see what you take in is as important as what you apply to your scalp and body. By taking care of your body from the inside and using products that have nutrients and stimulate from the outside you can achieve optimal scalp and hair health.

        I read your blog. I have many clients that come to see me who have used similar remedies to try to grow their hair. I would urge you to be careful before recommending the use of different ‘oils’ to grow hair. The fact is that all people with hair loss issues have an overactive sebaceous gland. Using oils to grow hair often simply clogs the follicle funnel, disturbs an already oily scalp, and ultimately hinders growth. Groing hair requires excellent hygiene (very clean scalp), and the use of various natural stimulating ingredients that increase circulation and provide your scalp with very specific nutrients for hair growth.
